Apple Revises EU App Store Policy, Introduces New Fees Amid Regulatory Pressure

Key Points

  • Apple allows users to transfer purchases from a secondary account to their primary Apple ID. Eligible purchases include apps, music, and other digital content.
  • The secondary account must not be part of Family Sharing or Purchase Sharing.
  • Both accounts must have two-factor authentication and be set to the same country and region.
  • The feature is currently only available in the U.S., with no confirmed global rollout date.

Apple has introduced a new feature that allows users to transfer purchases from one Apple Account to another. This helps them consolidate digital content like apps, music, movies, and books under a single Apple ID. This move simplifies content management and ensures users no longer need to switch accounts to access previously purchased items.

The migration process enables users to move purchases from a secondary Apple Account, typically used for Media and Purchases, to their primary Apple ID, associated with iCloud and most other Apple services.

However, this transfer has certain conditions. The secondary account cannot be part of Family Sharing or Purchase Sharing, and both accounts must have two-factor authentication enabled. Additionally, they must be linked to the same country and region.

Before initiating the migration, users must ensure that any remaining balance in the secondary account is spent and that there are no active rentals or pre-orders. Once these requirements are met, users can navigate to their device’s Media and Purchases tab, find the Migrate Purchases option, and follow the on-screen instructions. After completing the migration, the secondary account can no longer be used for purchases, and users will need to sign out of it on all their devices.

Currently, this feature is only available in the United States. Apple has not yet expanded the option to other regions, meaning users in the European Union, the UK, and India cannot access it. There is no official word on when or if the feature will roll out globally.
