Geely Launches 11 Satellites to Enhance Navigation for Autonomous Vehicles

Chinese automaker Geely Holding Group has announced the successful launch of 11 low-earth orbit satellites, marking its second deployment as part of an ambitious plan to bolster navigation capabilities for autonomous vehicles.

The satellites were launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province, highlighting Geely’s commitment to advancing technology in the automotive industry. With plans to have 72 satellites in orbit by 2025 and a constellation of 240 in the long term, Geely aims to enhance navigation precision and coverage significantly.

Since its first launch in June 2022, Geely has been steadily expanding its satellite network, positioning itself as a key player in the burgeoning field of autonomous driving technology. The company envisions its satellites supporting self-driving cars with high-precision positioning and catering to various commercial applications, including connectivity for consumer electronics.

Equipped with AI remote sensing capabilities, the satellites offer clear, high-resolution imaging with a precision ranging from 1 to 5 meters (3.2 to 16.4 feet), providing invaluable data for various industries beyond automotive.

China’s space industry, once dominated by the military, has witnessed significant diversification in recent years, with private investment playing an increasingly prominent role. The government’s decision to allow private investment in the space sector since 2014 has led to a surge in commercial activities, including satellite manufacturing and launch services.

In line with Beijing’s strategic vision outlined in its five-year plan for 2021-2025, which emphasizes the development of an integrated satellite network for communication, remote sensing, and navigation, Geely’s satellite initiative contributes to China’s broader efforts in space technology advancement.

Currently, China boasts more than 400 satellites in orbit, including those owned by commercial entities, reflecting the country’s growing presence in space exploration and satellite deployment.

Geely’s ambitious satellite project underscores its commitment to innovation and leadership in the automotive industry. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, including AI and remote sensing capabilities, Geely aims to redefine the future of transportation, paving the way for safer, more efficient autonomous vehicles powered by advanced navigation systems.
