Samsung Unveils Industry's First Low-Power DDR5X DRAM Chips for AI Applications

Key Points:

  • Samsung Electronics unveils the industry’s first low-power double data rate 5X (LPDDR5X) DRAM chips tailored for AI applications.
  • Compared to the previous generation, the LPDDR5X chips deliver over 25% improvement in performance and over 30% increase in capacity.
  • The announcement underscores Samsung’s technological leadership in the low-power DRAM market and its commitment to innovation.
  • After thorough verification by mobile device providers, mass production of the LPDDR5X chips is scheduled to begin in the year’s second half.

On Wednesday, the world’s leading memory chipmaker, Samsung Electronics, announced the development of the industry’s first low-power double data rate 5X (LPDDR5X) DRAM chips, specifically designed for artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

These cutting-edge chips boast industry-leading performance, supporting speeds of up to 10.7 gigabits per second (Gbps). According to Samsung Electronics, they have improved over 25% in performance and over 30% in capacity compared to the previous generation.

In the rapidly expanding market for on-device AI, where AI algorithms are executed directly on the device, low-power, high-performance LPDDR chips are becoming increasingly crucial. Samsung’s LPDDR5X chips are tailor-made to meet the demanding requirements of AI applications running on mobile devices.

With 12 nanometer-class process technology, Samsung has achieved the smallest size among existing LPDDR chips. This technological advancement underscores Samsung’s position as a leader in the low-power DRAM market, enhancing its competitiveness in the ever-evolving AI landscape.

Samsung Electronics is committed to ongoing innovation and customer collaboration to deliver optimized products for the forthcoming on-device AI era. By leveraging its expertise and resources, Samsung aims to stay at the forefront of technological advancements in AI.

Samsung’s LPDDR5X chips will be mass-produced in the year’s second half. Before mass production, mobile application processors and mobile device providers will thoroughly verify the chips to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance.
