Tesla Cybertruck is a bold design choice that sparks controversy

Tesla’s Chief Designer, Franz von Holzhausen, defended the angular and distinctive design of the Tesla Cybertruck, stating that its polarizing appearance is a powerful tool to elevate the Tesla brand. Speaking at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, von Holzhausen emphasized that the Cybertruck, far from being an experiment, is a deliberate move to create a conversation starter that captivates public attention.

“Love it or hate it, it’s a conversation starter, and it gets people talking about the brand,” von Holzhausen remarked. Despite facing delays and a higher-than-anticipated starting price of $60,990, the Tesla Cybertruck has garnered interest from individuals who have never considered owning a truck. Some potential buyers are queuing at Tesla showrooms to explore the unconventional vehicle.

Von Holzhausen dismissed skepticism about the Cybertruck’s potential for high-volume sales, asserting that its performance competes with traditional rivals. The vehicle’s design, characterized by stainless-steel cladding and angular features, drew inspiration from the Lamborghini Countach and Lockheed’s F-117 Stealth Fighter jet, known for its aggressive angularity.

The Chief Designer highlighted that the Cybertruck’s unique appearance is partly due to the challenge of bending steel into curves using traditional presses. He drew parallels with the Lamborghini Countach, noting that its design defied expectations, much like the F-117 Stealth Fighter.

The Cybertruck’s launch, however, faced some setbacks. In 2019, during its unveiling, von Holzhausen threw a metal ball at the truck, inadvertently shattering two of its fortified glass windows. Despite such incidents, von Holzhausen expressed confidence in the Tesla Cybertruck, asserting it brings new consumers into the truck market.

While a recent viral video showcased the Cybertruck struggling to ascend a slope while towing a Christmas tree, von Holzhausen emphasized its real-world functionality. He shared personal anecdotes, noting that his children enjoy being picked up from school in the Tesla Cybertruck.

Though divisive, the Cybertruck’s bold design continues to serve its purpose as a unique and attention-grabbing addition to Tesla’s lineup, challenging conventional norms in the automotive industry.
