Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon.com’s cloud computing arm, announced a new initiative on Tuesday to offer free computing power to researchers interested in using its proprietary AI Chips. The initiative aims to compete directly with Nvidia Corporation, a leading player in the AI chip industry.

The program, valued at $110 million, will provide credits for researchers to use AWS’s cloud data centers, specifically to access Amazon’s Trainium chips. Trainium, designed by AWS for developing artificial intelligence models, competes with Nvidia’s GPUs, those from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Alphabet’s Google Cloud.

AWS reported that researchers from renowned institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University and the University of California, Berkeley, have joined the program. Through this initiative, AWS plans to make 40,000 first-generation Trainium chips accessible. AWS, the largest cloud computing provider by revenue, faces increasing competition from Microsoft Corporation and others as more developers turn to specialized hardware for advanced AI projects.

Gadi Hutt, AWS’s head of business development for AI chips, explained that AWS employs a strategy different from Nvidia’s to attract attention to its custom AI chips. Typically, AI developers using Nvidia’s GPUs rely on Nvidia’s Cuda software platform for programming, which bypasses the need for direct programming on the hardware. In contrast, AWS publishes detailed documentation on its chip’s most fundamental component: the instruction set architecture. This transparency allows researchers and customers to program the chip directly, enabling fine-tuning that can significantly optimize performance.

AWS hopes this approach will appeal to large clients seeking enhanced control and potential cost savings by customizing chip performance. Hutt highlighted the potential impact of minor adjustments to chip architecture, which can yield significant improvements in large-scale AI applications that require tens of thousands of processors.

By providing direct access to Trainium’s underlying architecture, AWS believes it can attract developers and companies willing to invest heavily in infrastructure to drive performance gains while controlling costs. The initiative aims to challenge Nvidia’s stronghold in the AI chip market and demonstrate AWS’s commitment to offering flexible, high-performance AI research and development solutions.
