Meta Platforms Inc. has announced plans to invest up to $65 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) projects in 2025, focusing on expanding its infrastructure and increasing its AI workforce. CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the ambitious initiative in a Facebook post, stating that the investment will include constructing a vast data center and hiring additional AI specialists.

Zuckerberg said the planned data center would be “so large that it would cover a significant part of Manhattan.” Meta aims to bring around a gigawatt of computing power online next year and anticipates having more than 1.3 million graphics processing units (GPUs) by the end of 2025. He emphasized that this large-scale investment will drive Meta’s core products and business, foster innovation, and help maintain America’s leadership in technology.

The social media giant’s commitment to AI infrastructure comes amid an industry-wide push to develop more powerful AI capabilities. Companies like OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle recently announced a $100 billion joint venture, Stargate, to build AI infrastructure and data centers across the United States.

According to Bloomberg-compiled estimates, despite Meta’s ambitious investment scale, analysts had initially expected the company’s capital expenditures to reach around $51.3 billion in 2025. The announcement caused Meta’s shares to dip in premarket trading but later rebounded.

As the competition in AI intensifies, Meta’s substantial investment underscores its strategic focus on AI-driven innovation, particularly in enhancing its products, such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, with more sophisticated AI capabilities. The company continues to prioritize expanding its computing infrastructure to support the growing demands of AI development.
