In a new report released Wednesday, the civil rights group warns that without careful oversight, AI tools could deepen existing racial inequalities. The group is calling for urgent action, including bias audits and “equity-first” standards, to ensure that the technology helps, not harms, Black Americans.
The problem, the report explains, is that AI algorithms learn from data. If that data contains “cultural blind spots” or underrepresents certain groups, the AI may make biased decisions regarding diagnoses, treatments, or insurance.
“When you have such a powerful tool… we must be a part of the conversation to ensure that bad data isn’t leveraged to further disparities,” said NAACP President Derrick Johnson.
The 75-page blueprint is more than just a warning; it’s a call to action. The NAACP is already working with hospitals, tech companies, and universities to test fairness standards.
