YouTube embraces artificial intelligence by introducing new AI-powered tools for creators, including a text-to-video generator. The company plans to add the Dream Screen feature to YouTube Shorts later this year. Initially, creators can generate AI-generated video backgrounds using a green screen feature. By 2025, YouTube intends to expand this functionality, allowing users to create short, full-length videos of up to six seconds.
Google first introduced the new technology, Veo, in May, and this marks its first public use. With Veo, YouTube hopes to challenge competitors like OpenAI’s Sora and offer a powerful new tool to attract creators, particularly in the face of competition from TikTok and Instagram Reels. YouTube’s CEO, Neal Mohan, emphasized the platform’s commitment to supporting creators, “We’re committed to making sure creativity flourishes, communities thrive, and the creator economy grows on YouTube.”
In addition to text-to-video capabilities, YouTube is introducing several other AI-driven features to enhance content creation and engagement. For example, creators can now access AI-powered dubbing tools to translate their videos into multiple languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian. These tools could help creators reach wider global audiences. YouTube also offers AI-generated titles, thumbnails, and video outlines within YouTube Studio, allowing creators to streamline the process of posting new content.
To support rising creators, YouTube introduced a new engagement feature called Hype Points. This system allows creators with fewer than 500,000 subscribers to gain increased visibility. Users can “hype” videos they enjoy, and those with the most Hype points will appear on a new leaderboard. Initial tests in Turkey, Taiwan, and Brazil have been successful, with over 5 million “hypes” recorded across 50,000 unique channels. The largest group of Hype users is between 18 and 24 years old.
YouTube also enhances creator-fan interaction through its Communities feature, which acts like a chatroom for each channel. This will replace the “Comments” tab in YouTube Studio and feature AI-generated reply suggestions tailored to each creator’s style, helping them engage more effectively with their audience.
Additionally, YouTube is introducing tools to improve the display of content on TVs. Creators can organize videos into seasons, add subscription options, and more easily add links. YouTube reports that TV-based content consumption is on the rise, with a 30% increase in creators earning most of their revenue from TV screens.
