SK Hynix Unveils HMSDK for AI Optimization and High-performance Computing, CXL 2.0 Memory

Key Points

  • SK Hynix introduced the HMSDK, a memory control solution optimized for CXL.
  • CXL technology allows memory expansion by over 10 times and boosts AI performance.
  • The HMSDK enhances memory bandwidth by 30% and system performance by 12%.
  • CXL 2.0 memory with 96 GB and 128 GB capacity is set for mass production later this year.

SK Hynix announced on Monday the introduction of its Heterogeneous Memory Software Development Kit (HMSDK), a self-developed memory control solution designed to optimize the operation of Compute Express Link (CXL), a next-generation memory technology. This new software integrates with Linux, the world’s largest open-source operating system, aiming to enhance high-performance computing systems.

CXL is an advanced interface that connects central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), and memory to support ultra-high-speed and large-capacity computations. This technology is particularly important in applications like artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing, where massive data processing is essential. CXL can expand its capacity over 10 times when applied to existing memory modules, making it a game-changing solution for future AI applications.

The HMSDK developed by SK Hynix optimizes using CXL memory, positioning the company at the forefront of next-generation memory technologies. Along with High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), another critical chip for AI systems, CXL memory is expected to significantly accelerate the performance of generative AI tools such as large language models.

Joo Young-pyo, head of the software solution group at SK Hynix, emphasized the need for both semiconductor and system-level advancements to support AI technologies. “For the development and spread of AI systems such as large language models, it is now necessary to significantly improve not only semiconductors but also the level of system applications to support them,” Joo said. The integration with Linux, which powers most cloud systems, smartphones, and supercomputers, will allow global developers to adopt SK Hynix’s technology as the industry standard.

The HMSDK is designed to enhance the bandwidth of memory packages by more than 30% without requiring modifications to existing applications. Furthermore, system performance improves by over 12% through optimization techniques like relocating frequently accessed data to faster memory.

The semiconductor industry anticipates fully commercializing CXL technology, with the first CXL 2.0-compliant CPUs expected in the second half of this year. SK Hynix is preparing to develop CXL 2.0 memory modules with 96 GB and 128 GB capacities. These memory products are currently undergoing customer certifications, and mass production is planned by the end of the year.
