Spotify Expands AI-Powered Playlist Tool to U.S. and Canada to Attract Premium Users

Key Points

  • Spotify expands its AI Playlist feature to four new markets, including the U.S. and Canada.
  • Still in beta, the tool allows users to create personalized playlists based on text prompts.
  • AI Playlist is limited to music-related prompts and will not respond to non-music queries.
  • Spotify also offers a daylist and AI DJ to enhance user engagement with daily music recommendations.

Spotify (SPOT.N) is expanding its generative artificial intelligence (AI) playlist creation tool for premium subscribers to four new markets, including the United States and Canada, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the user experience and attract new subscribers. The tool, AI Playlist, is designed to help users curate personalized playlists, with the option to refine the selection further using text prompts.

Initially launched in the United Kingdom and Australia in April 2023, the AI Playlist was well-received, prompting Spotify to extend the feature to the U.S., Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. This move comes as the Swedish streaming giant looks to stay ahead of growing competition from rival music services, including Apple Music and Amazon Music, by integrating cutting-edge AI into its platform.

The AI Playlist tool allows premium users to create custom playlists based on their preferences, which can be refined through additional text inputs. However, as the tool is still in its beta phase, it is limited to music-related prompts. It will not generate results for unrelated topics like current events or specific brands.

Spotify continues to focus on AI-driven innovations to keep its platform competitive. In addition to AI Playlist, the company offers personalized tools like Day List, which provides users fresh, daily music recommendations, and AI DJ. This AI-powered feature curates music suggestions based on a user’s listening habits. These features are designed to give users more dynamic and engaging experiences tailored to their tastes.

The launch of AI Playlist in new regions comes when Spotify sees solid growth in its premium subscriber base. During the second quarter of 2023, the platform’s paying subscribers increased by about 12% year-over-year, reaching 246 million users. By expanding AI capabilities, Spotify aims to further accelerate this growth by enhancing user engagement and offering personalized listening experiences.

With competition in the streaming music industry intensifying, Spotify’s embrace of AI technologies is a strategic move to differentiate itself from rivals like Apple and Amazon, which have also been integrating AI into their music platforms.
