Key Points

  • Chinese demand for foreign luxury cars such as Porsche and Mercedes-Benz is declining.
  • Buyers are opting for more affordable and tech-focused cars from Chinese brands.
  • A weak economy, a property slump, and government subsidies for electric vehicles are driving the trend.
  • Chinese automakers now control nearly 70% of the passenger car market. Sales for major European luxury brands in China have dropped significantly.

Demand for foreign luxury cars in China is hitting a wall. Wealthy consumers are now turning away from prestigious brands such as Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW in favor of more affordable, tech-savvy models from Chinese automakers.

A perfect storm of factors is driving this dramatic shift. A prolonged slump in the property market has left many Chinese consumers hesitant to make big purchases.

The wealthy are also becoming more reluctant to flaunt their wealth. Adding to the pressure, the Chinese government is offering subsidies for electric and hybrid vehicles, a market dominated by domestic companies that are offering steep discounts.

As a result, the market share for premium cars, which more than doubled between 2017 and 2023, is now in reverse. Sales for foreign luxury brands are falling sharply. In the last quarter, Mercedes-Benz saw its China sales drop 27%, while BMW and Ferrari also reported significant declines.

Meanwhile, Chinese carmakers like BYD are on the rise. They are aggressively rolling out new, feature-packed electric and hybrid vehicles at lower prices, even in the premium segment. Chinese brands now command nearly 70% of the passenger car market, a stunning rise that has pushed aside their once-dominant European rivals.

The downturn is also hitting the used car market hard. Dealerships report that prices for used luxury cars have plummeted over the past year. As one used car salesperson joked, “Who still has money these days? People’s pockets are cleaner than their faces.”
