Key Points:

  • South Korea’s monthly ICT exports reached an all-time high of $47.79 billion, surging 128.9 percent.
  • Tech-related exports exceeded the $40 billion threshold for three consecutive months for the first time.
  • Semiconductor shipments soared 169.2 percent to a record $37.16 billion, driven by global AI investments.
  • Computer and peripheral exports more than tripled to $4.33 billion, driven by skyrocketing demand for enterprise SSDs.

South Korea’s ICT exports recently reached an all-time monthly record high, driven by an insatiable global appetite for advanced memory chips, servers, and hardware that power the artificial intelligence revolution. Government data shows that outbound shipments from the information and communication technology sector surged by 128.9% compared to the same month last year. This monumental trade performance highlights the country’s dominant position at the absolute center of the global AI infrastructure buildout.

According to official figures released by the Ministry of Science and ICT, total outbound shipments reached a staggering $47.79 billion last month, up from $20.88 billion a year earlier. This remarkable performance marks the first time in the nation’s history that monthly tech-related exports have exceeded the $40 billion threshold for three consecutive months. With tech imports rising by 36% year-on-year to hit $15.7 billion, the country’s high-tech sector generated an unprecedented trade surplus of $32.09 billion.

This historic trade performance has firmly established the technology sector as the primary driver of the country’s broader economic growth. High-tech shipments accounted for a massive 54.5% of South Korea’s total exports last month, which reached a record $87.75 billion. The data proves that the global transition toward artificial intelligence and high-speed data processing has successfully insulated the national economy from broader global inflationary pressures and supply chain challenges, giving the central bank more leeway to manage domestic monetary policies.

At the core of this export boom is the semiconductor sector, which continues to ride an unprecedented global supercycle. Outbound shipments of silicon microchips soared by 169.2% year-on-year to reach a record-breaking $37.16 billion. This performance marks the third consecutive month in which semiconductor exports have remained above $30 billion. The explosive growth reflects massive, ongoing investments by global cloud providers in advanced AI servers, alongside a sharp recovery in global DRAM and NAND flash memory prices.

To support this wave of high-performance computing, global tech giants are buying up storage media at an unprecedented rate, driving massive growth in auxiliary hardware. Outbound shipments of computers and related peripherals more than tripled compared to last year, reaching a record $4.33 billion. Skyrocketing demand for high-capacity solid-state drives (SSDs) for enterprise-level AI data centers is driving this segment’s growth. Shipments of these specialized storage devices alone rocketed by 337.7% to $3.97 billion, underscoring how rapidly companies are scaling up their cloud storage capacity.

While advanced cloud infrastructure hardware captured the bulk of the market’s attention, traditional consumer tech and display segments also posted solid gains. Driven by the integration of native generative AI features into mobile operating systems, smartphone exports jumped by a healthy 15.9% year-on-year. Simultaneously, exports of advanced display panels inched up by 2.8% compared to the previous year, supported by steady demand for high-end organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens used in premium mobile devices and automotive dashboards.

This massive export expansion has altered the geographical flow of South Korean technology goods, showing explosive growth across major trade partners. Outbound shipments to the United States rose more than 250% to $8.1 billion, reflecting the intense pace of data center construction across North America. Meanwhile, exports to China, including Hong Kong, more than doubled to hit $19.5 billion as Chinese hardware manufacturers ramped up production. Additionally, shipments to Vietnam, a key hub for mobile device assembly, rose by 90.8% year-on-year to reach $6.8 billion.

The historic trade performance of the past month proves that the global technology sector’s transition toward artificial intelligence has entered a mature, highly productive phase. By supplying the critical high-bandwidth memory chips, high-speed storage devices, and advanced displays that make modern computing possible, South Korea has secured its position as an irreplaceable anchor of the global digital economy. As global cloud providers and consumer electronics manufacturers continue to scale up their AI integrations, this high-tech export engine will likely drive robust economic growth for years to come.
