Microsoft Revamps Web Version of Windows App Store

To enhance user experience and streamline app discovery, Microsoft has launched a new web version of its app store for Windows. This web version of Windows App Store is intended to replace the existing method of finding Windows apps online, with links redirecting to the Microsoft Store client on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Microsoft took a fresh approach to the redesign, moving away from its old React codebase and adopting modern web technologies. The new web version of Windows App Store utilizes Shoelace, Lit, Vite, and a C# ASPNET backend to provide a more efficient and improved user interface. Judah Gabriel highlighted the transformation, stating that the old website relied on an outdated React codebase and an obsolete UI framework. The new design aims to deliver a more user-friendly interface, simplify app discovery, and leverage a modern web tech stack. Gabriel expressed hope that users will find the new web version of Windows App Store useful.

The redesigned web store offers an intuitive search feature, enabling users to easily search for Windows apps or Xbox PC games available for download through the primary Microsoft Store app on Windows. However, it’s important to note that this web version of Windows App Store is not a replacement for the main Store app; instead, it complements it. Microsoft intends to utilize this new web interface to broaden its app and game offerings beyond the Windows platform. Xbox chief Phil Spencer previously revealed Microsoft’s plans to create an Xbox mobile gaming store, anticipating potential regulatory changes that might require companies like Apple and Google to open their mobile app stores.

Xbox mobile gaming store may be introduced as early as 2024. To ensure discoverability in search results and links on social media networks, a web interface will be essential for the Xbox mobile gaming store, aligning with Microsoft’s strategy to expand its gaming ecosystem. This move signifies their proactive approach to adapting to evolving market dynamics and embracing the changing landscape of app distribution.
