OpenAI is bringing some of your favorite apps directly into ChatGPT. The company announced a new integration that will enable you to interact with services like Spotify, Canva, and Figma directly within your chatbot conversations.
This is a significant step in OpenAI’s plan to transform ChatGPT from a basic chatbot into a comprehensive, all-in-one assistant. The new feature is powered by a new “Apps SDK,” a software framework that enables third-party developers to integrate their services directly into ChatGPT.
Here’s how it works: you can now simply mention an app in your conversation, and ChatGPT will connect to it. For example, you can instruct ChatGPT to create a playlist for your party this Friday, saying, “Spotify, make a playlist for my party this Friday.”
The first time you do this, you’ll be prompted to connect your Spotify account. ChatGPT will then create the playlist for you, and you can access it directly in the Spotify app to listen.
OpenAI showcased other examples, such as using Canva to create posters for a dog-walking business that was being brainstormed in the chat.
Currently, the integration is limited to a select group of apps, including Canva, Coursera, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow. But more are on the way. In the coming weeks, you’ll also be able to connect to DoorDash, OpenTable, Target, and Uber. Later this year, OpenAI will open up the platform for other developers to submit their own applications.
