The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) achieved a significant milestone as its domestically-produced airliner, the COMAC C919, debuted internationally at the Singapore Airshow, marking a pivotal moment in its efforts to challenge the duopoly of Airbus and Boeing in the global passenger market.

The COMAC C919-100ER registered as B-001F, commenced its journey from Shanghai Pudong International Airport, making a technical stop in Sanya, Hainan, before landing at Changi Airport in Singapore. This marked the first time the C919 had flown over international airspace across multiple flight information regions.

Participating in the flying display, the C919 showcased its capabilities alongside the Airbus A350-1000, representing one of only two solo displays at the prestigious event.

As Airbus and Boeing face challenges in meeting demand for new aircraft amidst crises, COMAC aims to position itself as a viable alternative. The company plans significant investments over the next 3-5 years to expand C919 production capacity, capitalizing on the aviation industry’s attention amid a supply crunch.

Aviation consultancy firms, including Alton Aviation Consultancy and IBA, have noted the growing interest in the C919, with clients considering it as a potential option in their fleet evaluations. IBA forecasts a substantial increase in C919 deliveries in 2024 compared to previous years, indicating a strong opportunity for COMAC to gain market share, particularly in its domestic market.

In addition to the C919, COMAC’s ARJ21 also appeared at the Singapore Airshow, marking the first time this aircraft type has been showcased at an international event. While the ARJ21 is currently operational with low-cost carrier TransNusa in Indonesia, its presence at the airshow underscores COMAC’s broader efforts to expand its portfolio and presence in the global aviation market.
