Google Limits Pixel 6a Battery Performance After Overheating and Fire Risk Reports

Key Points

  • The Pixel 6a is facing overheating issues, with at least two devices reportedly catching fire due to battery problems.
  • Google will push a mandatory software update reducing battery capacity and charging speed after 400 cycles.
  • Battery management features will be introduced via Android 16 beta to prevent further safety risks.
  • Previous Pixel models also had battery issues, including the Pixel 4a and Pixel 7a.

Google is taking precautionary action on its Pixel 6a smartphones after alarming reports of battery overheating and, in rare cases, devices catching fire. According to Android Authority, at least two cases have been identified where the Pixel 6a’s battery overheated, ultimately resulting in the phone catching fire.

\In response, Google is implementing changes in the upcoming Android 16 beta, which will reduce the Pixel 6a’s battery capacity and charging speed. This software update will include new battery management features that automatically throttle performance once a device reaches 400 charge cycles, aiming to reduce the risk of overheating.

Google confirmed in a statement to Android Authority, “A subset of Pixel 6a phones will require a mandatory software update to reduce the risk of potential battery overheating. The update will enable battery management features that will reduce capacity and charging performance after the battery reaches 400 charge cycles. We’ll contact impacted customers next month, with all the information they need to address the issue.”

Although the Pixel 6a has generally been praised for its affordability and performance since its launch, this incident marks a notable setback. The device is scheduled to receive software support until July 2027, making this update a significant part of its long-term maintenance.

The overheating concerns with the Pixel 6a are not isolated. Earlier this year, Google issued an update for the Pixel 4a that reduced battery life to stabilize performance. In April, the company launched a repair and compensation program for Pixel 7a users following reports of battery swelling.

These developments raise broader concerns about battery reliability in Google’s Pixel lineup. While Google is actively addressing the issues through software fixes and customer outreach, it reflects a growing pattern of battery-related complications across multiple Pixel models.
