Key Points
- Google is reducing free access to its new AI image and text models.
- Free image generation with Nano Banana Pro is now limited to 2 per day, down from 3.
- Free use of the Gemini 3 Pro text model no longer has a guaranteed daily prompt limit.
- Paying subscribers on Google’s AI Pro and AI Ultra plans are not affected by the changes.
If you were planning to play around with Google’s newest AI tools, you might have to scale back your plans. The company has quietly put new restrictions on the free versions of its popular new models, citing “high demand” for the change.
The move affects Google’s new image generator, Nano Banana Pro. Free users, who previously could create 3 images per day, will now be limited to 2. In a support document, Google warned that these limits “may change frequently and will reset daily,” suggesting the number could fluctuate.
It’s not just the image creator feeling the squeeze. The company’s powerful new text model, Gemini 3 Pro, is also seeing its free access curtailed. When it launched, Google guaranteed five free prompts per day. Now, the company simply says non-paying users will get “basic access,” with daily limits that can change often.
These new restrictions are clearly designed to encourage users to upgrade. Anyone paying for a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription will see no change to their service. Their daily prompt limits remain generous, at 100 and 500, respectively.
Google isn’t the first to pump the brakes after a popular AI launch. OpenAI famously delayed the free rollout of its image generator after it proved a massive hit with users.
This move highlights the immense computational cost and popularity of generative AI, forcing companies to balance attracting new users with managing their resources and pushing customers toward paid plans.
