Key Points:
- A new Android app called Nearby Glasses detects smart eyewear.
- The software scans for Bluetooth signals from brands like Meta and Snap.
- The creator built the tool to fight secret recordings and privacy invasions.
- Users can customize the app to track other specific Bluetooth devices.
Smart glasses look just like regular eyewear, making it incredibly easy for people to record you without your permission. You might be filmed at a coffee shop or on the street and never even realize it. Now, a new Android app aims to solve this growing privacy problem by alerting you when someone nearby wears these devices.
The app is called Nearby Glasses. It works quietly in the background, constantly scanning your surroundings for specific Bluetooth signals. When it picks up a signal tied to wearable tech from companies like Meta or Snap, your phone immediately pings you with a warning.
Developer Yves Jeanrenaud created the tool after seeing how people abuse wearable surveillance technology. He read reports about bad actors using Meta Ray-Ban glasses to harass people or record sensitive situations in secret. He also strongly opposes Meta’s recent push to include facial recognition as a default feature. He calls these recording devices an intolerable invasion of our daily privacy.
The technology behind the app is quite straightforward. Every Bluetooth device broadcasts a unique identification code linked to its maker. The app simply listens for those exact codes. You can even add custom manufacturer codes to scan for other brands if you want.
Of course, the system is not entirely perfect. It might trigger a false alarm if someone nearby uses a Meta virtual reality headset instead of smart glasses. However, VR headsets are huge and obvious, so users can easily look around and spot the source of the signal.
Right now, Nearby Glasses only works on Android phones. Jeanrenaud says many people want an Apple version, but he builds this software in his free time. He views the project as a simple act of resistance, hoping it gives everyday people a way to protect their personal space.
