Key Points

  • OpenAI’s new flagship model, GPT-5, is now available to all users, including free ones.
  • GPT-5 is a “reasoning model” by default, designed to solve complex problems by breaking them down.
  • The company claims it is much faster and more accurate, with 80% fewer factual errors.
  • A new “Safe Completions” feature changes how the AI handles borderline-unsafe prompts.

OpenAI is rolling out its highly anticipated GPT-5 today, and for the first time, its most powerful model is available to everyone, including free users. The company is calling it its best model yet, with major improvements in coding, writing, safety, and accuracy.

CEO Sam Altman compared the upgrade to the jump from a standard screen to an iPhone Retina Display, saying GPT-5 “really feels like you’re talking to an expert in any topic.”

One of the biggest changes is that GPT-5 is a “reasoning model” by default. This means the system is designed to break down complex problems into smaller, logical steps to find an answer. This feature, previously hidden behind a “Think Longer” button, is now the standard experience.

OpenAI says GPT-5 is also much faster and more accurate than its previous models, with 80% fewer factual errors, or “hallucinations.”

It also introduces a new safety feature called “Safe Completions.” Instead of simply refusing to answer a borderline-unsafe prompt, the AI will now try to provide a helpful, high-level answer that can’t be used for harm.

There are three versions: the standard GPT-5 for all users (with usage limits for free accounts), GPT-5 Pro for high-paying subscribers, and a “mini” version that kicks in when you hit your usage cap.

Alongside the new model, OpenAI is adding new features to ChatGPT, including pre-set personalities (like cynic or nerd), better integration with Google apps, and an improved voice mode.
