Key Points

  • Apple and Samsung are both reportedly developing “crease-free” displays for their future foldable phones.
  • The new technology involves using laser-drilled metal plates to prevent the screen from creasing when folded.
  • Apple has waited to enter the market, likely to perfect the technology and avoid the flaws of current models.
  • Both the Apple foldable and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 are expected to launch around the second half of 2026.

The annoying crease in the middle of foldable phone screens might soon be a thing of the past. According to a well-known analyst, both Apple and Samsung are working on new technology to create a truly “crease-free” display. This could set the stage for a major showdown between the two smartphone giants.

The information comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a strong track record with Apple leaks. He reports that Apple plans to use special laser-drilled metal plates in its first foldable iPhone. This plate helps distribute the stress when the screen bends, preventing the material from becoming tired and forming a permanent crease.

Now, it appears that Samsung plans to utilize the same technology in its future Galaxy Z Fold 8. Current foldable phones, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7, don’t utilize this technology, which is why they have a visible seam.

Apple is renowned for striving to make its products perfect, which is likely why it hasn’t yet released a foldable phone. The company probably wasn’t willing to accept the display crease found on current models. If this new technology eliminates that flaw, Apple will jump on it. Seeing this, Samsung doesn’t want to be left behind with older, creased technology.

Both phones are expected to go into mass production in the second half of 2026. This means we could see an epic foldable showdown next year, with both companies launching their new crease-free devices around the same time.
