Key Points
- Threads now have a dedicated feed that displays posts from accounts you follow on other platforms, such as Mastodon.
- The new feed displays posts in reverse chronological order, with the most recent content appearing first.
- You can now search for and follow users from the fediverse directly within the Threads app.
- You must manually enable the feature in your settings to view the new feed.
Meta’s Threads is making it easier to follow what’s happening on other decentralized social media platforms like Mastodon without ever leaving the app. The company announced a deeper integration with the “fediverse,” a network of independent social sites.
Starting today, if you’ve already enabled sharing to the fediverse, you’ll see a new, dedicated feed inside Threads. This feed will display posts from the federated accounts you follow, such as those on Mastodon, Bookwyrm, or WriteFreely. The posts will appear in a simple, reverse-chronological order, so the newest content is always at the top.
You can also now search for these outside users directly from the Threads search bar. You just need to type their full handle, including their home platform (for example, “@username@mastodon.social”). If there’s a match, their profile will appear with a special fediverse icon.
Meta says this is part of its year-long effort to build responsibly into the fediverse. The move helps them connect with other platforms. Still, it also cleverly keeps users within the Threads ecosystem, as they no longer need to leave the app to view this content.
However, it’s essential to note that this is still an opt-in feature that you must enable yourself. And while you can see their posts, you still can’t see replies to your content from the fediverse within Threads. For that, you’ll have to go to the other platforms.
