Oura, the Finnish company known for its smart rings, has introduced its fourth-generation Oura Ring, boasting a sleeker design, enhanced battery life, and smarter sensors. One of the standout changes is the Ring 4’s perfectly round shape, free from external etchings, giving it a more refined look. The internal sensors, previously housed in raised bumps, are now flush with the body, offering a smoother and more comfortable fit.
The most significant upgrades lie in the sensor technology. Along with a new “Smart Sensing” algorithm, the Oura Ring 4 features 18 signal pathways, up from eight in the previous model. This system optimizes the sensors to maintain constant readings, even with the movement of the ring throughout the day. The improved hardware offers a 30% increase in blood oxygen sensing accuracy, 31% fewer gaps in nighttime heart rate data, and 7% fewer gaps during the day.
Battery life has also been enhanced, with the Ring 4 now lasting up to eight days on a single charge, though Oura has not disclosed the exact battery size. The new model is available in 12 sizes (4-15) and six colors: Silver, Brushed Silver, Gold, Rose Gold, Stealth, and Black. All versions, except Stealth, feature a titanium exterior with a physical vapor deposition coating, while the Stealth model is coated with diamond-like carbon. The ring is water-resistant up to 100 meters and suitable for swimming and saunas.
Oura is also updating its mobile app to organize better the data it collects into three categories: Today, Vitals, and My Health. These sections offer insights into daily vital signs and long-term trends, including cardiovascular health, stress levels, and sleep patterns. These updates will roll out to all Oura users, regardless of the generation of their ring.
Additional features are included for users who subscribe to Oura’s membership service ($5.99/month or $69.99/year). These perks include automatic heart rate and activity detection for 40 different activities and enhanced stress-tracking capabilities. The app will also provide new fertility insights for menstruating users designed to aid in pregnancy.
Oura Ring 4 is available for pre-order, with shipping starting on October 15, 2024, at prices beginning at $349. The first month of membership is free, and users are encouraged to order an updated sizing kit before purchasing their ring.
