Volkswagen is developing an entry-level electric vehicle (EV) with a starting price of €20,000 ($21,000). The company recently shared the initial design with its employees during a meeting in Wolfsburg, Germany. While the official public unveiling is set for early March, the production version is not expected to be ready until 2027.

Details about the new model’s specifications remain undisclosed. However, Volkswagen confirmed that this vehicle will be part of its upcoming lineup of small EVs, including the ID.2all. The ID.2all was first introduced as a concept in 2023, with the production model scheduled to hit dealerships in 2026 at a base price of €25,000.

The new €20,000 EV will be Volkswagen’s most affordable electric model, but it is unclear whether it will be released globally. Thomas Schäfer, a Volkswagen executive, described it as an “affordable, high-quality, and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe,” suggesting it may primarily target the European market.

Since launching the ID product family in 2019, Volkswagen has expanded its EV lineup. The company has sold over 1.35 million ID-series vehicles worldwide, including 500,000 ID.3 units in 2023 alone.

Volkswagen’s push to introduce more affordable EVs aligns with its broader strategy to make electric mobility accessible to a wider audience. The company faces increasing competition in the EV market, where affordability remains a key challenge for many consumers. By offering a €20,000 model, Volkswagen aims to strengthen its position in the market and cater to cost-conscious buyers looking for an entry-level EV.

The industry will closely watch Volkswagen’s upcoming announcement in March as more details about the new vehicle’s features, performance, and potential availability beyond Europe are expected to emerge.
