LG Energy Solution has achieved a significant milestone by being recognized for delivering the highest-quality electric vehicle (EV) batteries at the 2024 China Automotive Quality Research Awards, surpassing prominent local manufacturers CATL and BYD. This award marks a key achievement for the South Korean company, solidifying its reputation in the competitive Chinese EV battery market.
The awards ceremony, which took place in Beijing on Tuesday, was organized by CheZhiWang, a Chinese automotive media platform, and Car Research Consulting Beijing, a leading automotive think tank founded in 2017. The recognition was based on a comprehensive consumer survey that evaluated 128 vehicle models from 51 brands across several categories, including battery quality, powertrains, and new energy technologies such as electric vehicles, hybrids, and autonomous driving systems.
LG Energy Solution secured first place in the battery quality category, a ranking determined by consumer feedback on product quality and user dissatisfaction scores. This category specifically highlights manufacturers that have effectively addressed real-world concerns, ensuring product reliability and performance for end-users.
The win for LG Energy Solution is particularly significant given the fierce competition from CATL and BYD, which have deep roots in the Chinese market. An LG Energy Solution official emphasized the importance of this achievement: “Winning first place for battery quality in China, especially over such well-established local companies, is a big deal for us. It’s a clear sign that our hard work on quality management and customer focus is really making a difference.”
Although LG Energy Solution has made impressive strides in battery quality, it still trails CATL in global market share. As of 2023, CATL held a dominant 36.8% share of the global EV battery market, while LG Energy Solution accounted for 13.6%. CATL has led the market since 2018, driven by its rapid growth and strong sales both domestically in China and internationally.
In addition to LG Energy Solution’s recognition for battery quality, the awards also honored other notable companies. BYD and Huawei received accolades for their powertrain technologies, while BYD, Geely, Nio, and Chery Automobile were commended for their contributions to the new energy sector.
