Amazon has officially discontinued the Kindle Oasis, marking the end of an era for Kindle devices featuring physical page-turn buttons. Originally launched in 2016 and last refreshed in 2019, the Oasis was Amazon’s premium e-reader model, known for its luxurious design and unique button system. The device is now listed as unavailable on Amazon’s U.S. site, and once the remaining stock sells out, Amazon has confirmed there will be no more units restocked.

“Once current inventory of Kindle Oasis sells out online and in stores, we will not restock the device,” Amazon spokesperson Devon Corvasce told The Verge. The decision to discontinue the Oasis reflects changing consumer preferences. According to Corvasce, most Kindle users now prefer to navigate their e-books by tapping the screen rather than using physical buttons. As a result, all future Kindle models will exclusively feature touchscreens for page-turning, aligning with the design of the rest of Amazon’s current Kindle lineup.

The Kindle Oasis was always positioned as a luxury e-reader with a higher price than Amazon’s other Kindle models. However, including physical buttons added extra bulk to the device, a trade-off that some users appreciated while others did not.

The most recent 2019 version of the Kindle Oasis featured a 7-inch display with adjustable brightness and warmth settings. It was also equipped with an auto-brightness feature adapted to ambient light conditions. However, with no updates since 2019, Amazon’s decision to discontinue the Oasis isn’t a huge surprise.

Looking ahead, Amazon has introduced several new Kindle models that offer alternatives for those seeking to upgrade. The new Kindle Colorsoft, Amazon’s first e-reader with a color screen, is available for $279.99 / £269.99.

Other recent releases include refreshed versions of the Kindle Paperwhite, the Kindle Scribe (which offers stylus support), and the entry-level Kindle. With a wide variety of new models, Amazon is ensuring there’s something for everyone, though fans of the Kindle Oasis may miss its unique design and features.
