Key points

  • OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Go in India, its cheapest AI subscription tier, priced at ₹399/month.
  • Offers 10x message limits, image generation, file uploads, and double the memory compared to the free tier.
  • This move reflects OpenAI’s focus on expanding its presence in the Indian market.
  • ChatGPT Go undercuts competitors like Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Ultra in pricing.

OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT Go in India, marking its most affordable AI subscription tier globally. Priced at just ₹399 per month (approximately USD 4.6), the service aims to tap into the price-sensitive Indian market, a strategy highlighted by OpenAI Vice President Nick Turley in a recent X post.

The announcement also confirmed the integration of India’s widely used Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for seamless subscription payments. This strategic move underscores OpenAI’s commitment to expanding its reach within one of its fastest-growing markets.

ChatGPT Go offers a significant upgrade over the free tier, providing users with ten times the message limits, the ability to generate images, upload files, and double the available memory. This enhanced functionality makes the subscription a compelling value proposition for Indian users.

In contrast to its premium offerings, ChatGPT Pro (₹19,900/month) and ChatGPT Plus (₹1,999/month), ChatGPT Go provides substantial capabilities at a fraction of the cost.

The competitive pricing of ChatGPT Go is notable when compared to rival offerings. Microsoft’s Copilot is priced at ₹2,000 per month, while Google’s top-tier AI Ultra plan costs a significant ₹24,500 per month.

OpenAI’s aggressive pricing strategy directly challenges these established players in the Indian market. This move reflects CEO Sam Altman’s vision for India to become OpenAI’s largest market by volume in the near future.

OpenAI’s commitment to India extends beyond just its subscription service. Earlier this year, Altman met with India’s IT minister, and discussions around AI education projects have also taken place.

India currently stands as OpenAI’s second-largest market by volume, trailing only the United States. The recent launch of GPT-5, with its base model integrated into ChatGPT’s free tier, further strengthens OpenAI’s position and commitment to the Indian market.
