  • OpenAI is exploring the establishment of a 1-gigawatt data center in India.
  • This move signifies a major expansion of OpenAI’s Stargate AI infrastructure in Asia.
  • The company has officially registered in India and is building a local team. A Delhi office is planned to open later this year.
  • CEO Sam Altman may announce the data center during his visit in September.

OpenAI, the creator of the popular ChatGPT AI, is reportedly planning a significant expansion into the Indian market with the construction of a massive data center. According to a Bloomberg News report, the company is actively seeking local partners to facilitate the project, aiming for a facility with a capacity of at least 1 gigawatt.

While OpenAI has yet to confirm the news officially, the scale of the proposed data center underscores the company’s commitment to establishing a strong presence in India, its second-largest market by user base.

This ambitious undertaking would represent a significant step forward for OpenAI’s Stargate initiative, a global effort to enhance the infrastructure of artificial intelligence. Stargate, announced earlier this year, involves significant private sector investment aimed at developing AI capabilities.

The potential Indian data center would serve as a key component of this global strategy, providing crucial support for OpenAI’s growing user base and AI services in the region.

Further solidifying its commitment to India, OpenAI has already taken formal steps to establish a legal entity within the country and is actively recruiting for a local team. The company plans to open its first Indian office in New Delhi later in 2023, signifying a concrete step towards localized operations.

The exact location and timeline for the data center remain unclear; however, speculation suggests that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman may make an official announcement during his planned visit to India in September.

The success of this project could significantly impact the growth of AI in India, attracting further investment and bolstering the nation’s technological capabilities.

The scale of the proposed data center underscores the strategic importance OpenAI attributes to the Indian market, positioning it for significant growth and influence within the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence in Asia.
