Key points

  • Revolutionary miniature SSD, smaller than a US penny, offers up to 2TB capacity.
  • Achieves impressive read/write speeds of 3700MB/s and 3400MB/s, respectively, via PCIe 4×2.
  • Targets laptops, tablets, smartphones, and cameras due to its compact size and durability.
  • Success hinges on industry standardization through SDA or PCI-SIG adoption.

Biwin, a Chinese storage manufacturer, has unveiled the Mini SSD, a groundbreaking storage solution boasting a remarkably small footprint—smaller than a US penny, measuring just 15mm x 17mm x 1.4mm. This diminutive device packs a punch, offering capacities up to 2TB and impressive performance.

With sequential read speeds reaching 3700MB/s and write speeds of 3400MB/s via a PCIe 4×2 connection, the Mini SSD outperforms traditional microSD cards significantly, nearing the speeds of full-size SD Express cards. Its compact design makes it ideal for integration into a variety of portable devices, including laptops, tablets, smartphones, and cameras.

The Mini SSD’s performance, however, is only one part of the equation. Its success hinges on widespread adoption, a challenge Biwin faces. Unlike SanDisk’s approach with microSD, which ensured broad industry support through standardization, Biwin has yet to submit its Mini SSD format to either the Secure Digital Association (SDA) or the PCI Special Interest Group (PCI-SIG).

This lack of standardization could severely limit the Mini SSD’s market penetration, confining it to only devices explicitly designed to accommodate it.

To truly realize its potential as a microSD replacement, Biwin must actively seek standardization. Acceptance by either the SDA or PCI-SIG would pave the way for broader compatibility, encouraging other manufacturers to incorporate the Mini SSD into their product lines. This step is crucial to unlocking the Mini SSD’s full market potential, allowing it to become a ubiquitous storage solution for portable devices.

Despite this crucial hurdle, the Mini SSD already boasts several compelling advantages. Its SIM tray-like slot facilitates easy installation and removal, while its IP68 water and dust resistance, as well as drop protection, add to its durability and suitability for mobile applications.

Although not the fastest SSD on the market, its small size and robust performance make it an attractive option for devices where space is at a premium. Early adoption by gaming handhelds like the GPD Win 5 and OneNetbook’s OneXPlayer Super X suggests a promising start.
