Key Points

  • Stellantis is investing $13 billion in its U.S. manufacturing operations. The plan will add 5,000 jobs and bring five new models to market.
  • A key part of the investment is the reopening of a shuttered plant in Belvidere, Illinois.
  • The move is also seen as a way to curry favor with the Trump administration and offset the cost of tariffs.
  • The goal is to regain sales momentum in the critical U.S. market.

Automaker Stellantis announced a massive $13 billion investment in its U.S. operations on Tuesday. The plan will bring five new models to market, add 5,000 jobs, and, most notably, reopen a plant in Illinois that was controversially shut down last year.

The move, which the company’s CEO called the largest investment in its history, is a clear effort to regain sales momentum in the crucial American market. It’s also a strategic play to soften the blow of President Trump’s tariffs, which the company has said will cost it about $1.7 billion this year.

“Success in America is not just good for Stellantis in the U.S. — it makes us stronger everywhere,” said CEO Antonio Filosa.

The investment will be spread across plants in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana. A key part of the announcement is the reopening of the factory in Belvidere, Illinois. The plant’s closure in 2023 was a major point of contention with the United Auto Workers union, which had threatened to strike over the issue. Now, the factory will be brought back to life to produce two new Jeep models starting in 2027, which will create about 3,300 jobs.

The news was a big hit with investors, who sent Stellantis’s U.S.-listed shares up about 7% in after-hours trading.
