Samsung Electronics is making a bold claim about its next-generation AI chips. The company’s chip division co-CEO, Jun Young-hyun, said on Friday that customers are already praising the performance of its upcoming HBM4 memory chips. In a New Year address to employees, he even said that some customers have declared, “Samsung is back.”

This is a big statement for a company that has fallen behind in the red-hot market for high-bandwidth memory (HBM). These specialized chips are essential for training the massive artificial intelligence models that power tools like ChatGPT.

For the past year, Samsung’s main rival, SK Hynix, has dominated this space, securing a lucrative deal to supply its HBM chips to the AI giant Nvidia.

Samsung has been scrambling to catch up. Back in October, the company announced it was in “close discussion” to supply its own HBM4 chips to Nvidia. This latest announcement suggests that the talks are progressing well and that Samsung’s new technology is meeting the industry’s high standards.

While the company didn’t give many technical details, the co-CEO’s comments are a clear sign of renewed confidence. Samsung is one of the world’s largest chipmakers, but it has struggled to keep pace in this specific, high-profit segment.

By highlighting positive customer feedback, Samsung is signaling to the market that it is ready to compete at the highest level again.
