Key Points:

  • President Trump issued an agency-wide ban against the AI company Anthropic.
  • Defense Secretary Hegseth declared the startup a supply chain risk.
  • Lockheed Martin immediately pledged to follow the President’s directive.
  • Legal experts question the authority of the ban but expect companies to comply.

U.S. defense contractors are quickly falling in line with a new government order to purge artificial intelligence tools made by Anthropic. Even though legal experts question if the Trump administration’s ban is legal, major companies like Lockheed Martin are expected to remove the software from their supply chains to stay in the government’s good graces.

The conflict erupted last Friday after weeks of heated debate. Anthropic refused to remove the safety guardrails on its AI models, which the military wanted to use. In response, President Donald Trump announced a federal ban on the company, giving agencies six months to phase out the technology.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth went a step further. He promised to designate Anthropic as a national security supply chain risk. He stated that any company doing business with the military is now forbidden from doing any commercial activity with the AI firm. Anthropic plans to fight this ban in court, arguing the government overstepped its legal authority.

However, the shaky legal ground won’t stop defense contractors from following the order. Lockheed Martin issued a statement confirming it will follow the President’s direction. The company noted it does not depend on any single AI vendor and expects minimal business impact.

Contracting attorneys say this reaction is predictable. With trillions of dollars in government contracts on the line, these firms cannot risk angering the White House. Franklin Turner, a lawyer specializing in government contracts, noted that most companies are “hyper-aware” of what the government wants and are likely already taking steps to remove Anthropic from their systems.

Legal experts call the ban a “highly aggressive position” and believe it would likely fail if challenged in court. However, they admit the threat alone has already caused significant harm to Anthropic’s business and reputation. Other major contractors like General Dynamics and Raytheon have declined to comment on their plans.
