China is achieving major goals in its space program. Last year, the country completed more than ninety orbital launches, breaking its own national record. Over the past five years, China has also built a low-earth orbit space station, landed a rover on Mars, and brought back rocks from the far side of the moon.
These fast-paced achievements worry American experts. A new report from the Commercial Space Federation and Arizona State University warns that the United States might lose its top spot in space. Dave Cavossa, the federation president, stated that China could easily pass the US in just five years if Americans fail to act.
The United States still spends about five times more on space exploration than China does. However, Chinese funding is growing at a rapid pace. Money flowing into China’s commercial space sector jumped from 340 million dollars in 2015 to almost four billion dollars in 2025.
A massive shift happened in 2014 when the Chinese government allowed private companies to enter the space industry. Now, over a dozen private Chinese manufacturers are building rockets. Some of these young companies are even working on reusable rockets to rival Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
China also uses space technology to gain global influence. The country finished its BeiDou navigation system to compete directly with the American GPS. Through its international infrastructure program, China builds satellite ground stations for nations like Egypt and Pakistan, increasing its soft power abroad.
To keep the lead, American experts say the US government needs to step up. They recommend investing money into new spaceports and making the launch licensing process much simpler for private companies. The next space race will depend entirely on who builds the strongest commercial industry.
