Alibaba and China Telecom are joining forces to open a new data center in southern China, powered by Alibaba’s own advanced chips. This move highlights China’s growing commitment to building its own artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The facility, recently announced, will house 10,000 of Alibaba’s Zhenwu chips. These chips are specifically designed for training and running AI models, including those with hundreds of billions of parameters – some of the largest in existence. This development shows how major Chinese tech companies are pushing forward their own AI chip technology as Beijing emphasizes self-reliance.
For several years, the U.S. has tried to limit China’s access to vital semiconductor technology, including AI chips from companies like Nvidia. These restrictions have spurred China to speed up its efforts to create domestic alternatives.
Alibaba, a leading Chinese tech firm, has been developing its own chips through its T-head division. The company, based in Hangzhou, is also a major player in cloud computing in China. It designs chips, constructs data centers, and develops its own AI models, which it then offers through its cloud computing services. Cloud computing has been one of its fastest-growing business areas lately.
China is increasingly focusing on building large-scale data centers using domestically developed technology. For example, a computing cluster utilizing Huawei’s advanced Ascend 910C AI chips began operations last month.
Unlike U.S. tech giants, which are projected to spend about $700 billion this year on their AI development, Chinese companies are adopting a different strategy. They are investing less and concentrating their AI efforts on industries they believe will generate revenue growth and a good return on their investments.
