Key Points:

  • Alibaba revealed its new XuanTie C950, a 5-nanometer processor, on Tuesday.
  • This server chip runs at 3.2 GHz and uses the open-source RISC-V design.
  • It’s reportedly over three times faster than its predecessor, the XuanTie C920.
  • Alibaba is making these moves to boost profitability as AI model prices drop due to intense competition.

Alibaba, the huge Chinese tech company, just showed off its latest processor, the XuanTie C950. This advanced 5-nanometer chip was revealed at an internal conference, signaling Alibaba’s big push into “agentic AI.”

According to local media reports, this powerful server chip runs at 3.2 GHz and is built using the open-source RISC-V chip architecture. At a conference hosted by DAMO Academy, Alibaba’s research arm, they hailed it as “the highest performing RISC-V CPU in the world.”

The reports claim that the new XuanTie C950 performs more than three times faster than its previous version, the XuanTie C920. However, the company didn’t say which manufacturer actually produced the chip. Alibaba has not yet responded to requests for comments.

Alibaba is really stepping up its internal chip development through its T-Head semiconductor division. While the Zhenwu 810E chip series focuses on AI training and inference, the XuanTie series is designed for high-performance cloud systems and agentic AI.

This chip announcement follows last week’s launch of Wukong, Alibaba’s enterprise platform designed to optimize AI agent workflows. This platform is being adopted by companies and institutions across China. Its international version, Accio Work, was introduced on Monday. This agentic AI platform aims to autonomously handle complex business operations for small and medium-sized businesses.

Earlier this month, the company also reorganized some of its AI teams into a new group called the Alibaba Token Hub. This new hub is dedicated to creating AI work platforms for various enterprises.

This shift in business strategy comes as Alibaba is looking for new ways to make money. Prices for Chinese AI models have fallen sharply due to fierce domestic competition, putting pressure on profits. By developing cutting-edge chips and platforms for agentic AI, Alibaba aims to secure its position and profitability in the fast-changing AI landscape.
