Google LLC has launched Android XR, a revolutionary operating system for extended reality (XR) devices. This marks a major step forward in the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR). This new software platform, developed in collaboration with Samsung Electronics Co., will be a new generation of wearable devices, beginning with a Samsung-built headset that will debut next year.

The first Android XR device, codenamed Project Moohan, will be available in 2025 and equipped with Qualcomm Technologies Inc. chips. The headset represents Samsung’s push into the XR market, leveraging its partnership with Google and Qualcomm to compete with established giants like Meta Platforms Inc. and Apple Inc.

Google’s President of the Android Ecosystem, Sameer Samat, emphasized the partnership’s transformative potential and highlighted the new opportunities Android XR will provide for developers and users alike. Samsung is expected to unveil its XR headset at a major event in San Jose, California, next month, in conjunction with the release of its Galaxy S25 smartphone series.

Android XR promises to deliver an open, unified platform for headsets and glasses, enhancing user choice and enabling access to familiar apps and experiences. For developers, the platform offers streamlined tools to build immersive experiences across various devices. Key features include watching YouTube and Google TV on a virtual big screen, exploring cities through immersive Google Maps views, and accessing 3D photo galleries via Google Photos.

Future Android XR-powered glasses will integrate seamlessly with other Android devices and incorporate Gemini, Google’s AI assistant. With a single tap, users can receive translations, directions, or message summaries, enabling a new level of convenience and interactivity without relying on a smartphone.
