MediaTek Unveils Dimensity 9400 Processor with Focus on AI, Mobile Gaming, and Efficiency

Key Points

  • MediaTek’s latest flagship mobile processor, Dimensity 9400, features AI-driven performance with the Agentic AI Engine.
  • Improved CPU design boosts single-thread and multi-core performance by 35% and 28%, respectively.
  • GPU upgrades bring 41% more peak performance and 44% better power savings for gaming.
  • The processor enhances mobile photography and video with AI-powered Super Zoom and 4K60 video capture.

MediaTek has introduced its latest flagship mobile processor, the Dimensity 9400, which builds on the success of last year’s Dimensity 9300. The new chip aims to offer smartphone makers a compelling option for their next generation of devices, focusing on improving performance in mobile photography, gaming, artificial intelligence (AI), and connectivity.

A standout feature of the Dimensity 9400 is its neural processing unit (NPU), now in its eighth generation. The NPU, powered by the Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE), introduces groundbreaking AI capabilities, including on-device video generation and on-device LoRA training. MediaTek claims it offers 80% faster performance for large language models (LLMs) while consuming 35% less power, addressing concerns around generative AI’s power demands. MediaTek is also working on a third-party APK to help developers fully tap into the NPU’s potential.

The Dimensity 9400 uses Arm’s v9.2 CPU architecture and TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, featuring an All-Big Core design from its predecessor. It boasts one Cortex-X925 performance core at 3.62GHz, three Cortex-X4 cores, and four Cortex-A720 efficiency cores, resulting in significant performance boosts. MediaTek claims a 35% increase in single-thread performance, 28% in multi-core performance, and 40% in power efficiency, ensuring faster speeds and longer battery life for mobile devices.

The upgraded 12-core Immortalis-G925 GPU delivers substantial performance improvements for mobile gamers, with a 41% boost in peak performance and a 40% increase in ray tracing. The GPU is also 44% more power-efficient, providing smoother gaming experiences, more realistic lighting, and higher frame rates for resource-intensive games.

Mobile content creators will benefit from the Imagiq 1090 image signal processor (ISP), which excels at handling HDR zoom, smooth video transitions, and 4K60 video capture with 14% less power usage. The Generative-AI Super Zoom feature improves photo clarity for distant subjects, and the chip’s support for six microphones and 24-bit audio recording enhances audio capture by masking unwanted background noise with AI Audio Focus.

On the connectivity front, the Dimensity 9400 supports 3GPP Rel. 17 with sub-6GHz 5G for up to 7Gbps speeds and can handle dual SIM cards with dual active data. The integrated Wi-Fi 7 radio achieves download speeds of up to 7.3Gbps, and the Bluetooth chip saves 50% on power while extending its range by 30 meters.

Smartphones featuring the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 are expected to arrive soon, with announcements from Oppo and Vivo anticipated in the near future. MediaTek suggests that some devices may hit the market before the end of the year.
