Key Points

  • MSI has launched a new mini PC called the AI Edge. It is powered by AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor.
  • The device can be configured with up to 128GB of memory for on-device AI workloads.
  • MSI claims its gaming performance is comparable to an RTX 4060 GPU.
  • The AI Edge is entering a crowded market with over 30 competing devices.

MSI is the latest company to join the growing market for mini PCs powered by AMD’s new Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor. The new “AI Edge” device is designed to be a compact powerhouse, capable of handling demanding AI workloads, everyday office tasks, and even high-end gaming.

The AI Edge is a small, 4-liter box that can be configured with up to 128GB of high-performance memory. This is a key feature of on-device AI, enabling the machine to run large language models with up to 120 billion parameters.

But the AI Edge isn’t just for AI developers. MSI is also touting its gaming performance, which it says is comparable to a GeForce RTX 4060-class GPU. To prevent overheating during extended gaming or AI sessions, the machine features an advanced cooling system with specialized heatsinks.

The device includes a suite of bundled software that leverages its on-device computing power. This includes tools for generating notes, creating mind maps, and processing personal datasets. A technology called Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) enables users to analyze sensitive data, such as financial records, directly on the device without sending it to the cloud.

The front of the AI Edge features a clean, simple port layout, including USB-C, USB-A, a headphone jack, and an SD card slot.

With over 30 other mini PCs on the market using the same Ryzen AI Max+ 395 chip, MSI is betting that its high memory capacity, strong gaming performance, and focus on on-device AI will be enough to make the AI Edge stand out.
