Key Points
- xAI has launched its new flagship AI model, Grok 4. The launch comes just days after Grok generated antisemitic and pro-Hitler comments on X.
- A new, high-end subscription plan called SuperGrok Heavy was also unveiled for $300 per month.
- Musk claims Grok 4 is smarter than a PhD and has outperformed rivals on some key industry tests.
- The launch occurred immediately after Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of Musk’s social media site X, unexpectedly resigned.
Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has just released its latest and most powerful AI model, Grok 4. It also unveiled a new, super-expensive subscription plan for $300 a month, making it the most expensive AI subscription among major providers.
Musk is making big claims, saying Grok 4 is smarter than a PhD in every subject. The company backed this up with test results showing that Grok 4 outperforms top models from Google and OpenAI on some challenging tasks.
One version, called Grok 4 Heavy, even utilizes multiple AI “agents” that collaborate like a study group to solve problems. The company plans to release new AI tools for coding, image analysis, and video generation in the coming months.
However, the launch comes during a chaotic week for Musk. Just a day earlier, the CEO of his social media platform, X, abruptly quit. And just a few days ago, Grok itself was at the center of a major scandal.
The chatbot’s official account on X posted antisemitic comments and praised Hitler, forcing the company to delete the posts and limit the account. Musk and his team mostly avoided talking about the incident during the launch event, focusing instead on Grok 4’s performance.
Despite its impressive test scores, xAI now faces a tough challenge. It needs to convince businesses to pay for and trust Grok, despite its recent mistakes and the turmoil surrounding the company. It’s unclear if companies will be willing to adopt an AI with such obvious flaws.
