Online shopping transactions across South Korea climbed 7.3% year-on-year in July, reaching a massive 25 trillion won ($18.2 billion). The monthly transaction value increased by 1.7 trillion won compared to the same period last year, marking the second-largest monthly volume since modern statistical recordkeeping began in 2017. Strong consumer demand for on-demand food delivery services, fresh grocery orders, and direct-to-consumer vehicle purchases powered the robust summer retail expansion.

The July performance sits just beneath the all-time historic high of 25.5 trillion won recorded in March. Prolonged summer heatwaves and frequent seasonal rainstorms encouraged consumers across major metropolitan areas to stay indoors and order everyday essentials through digital channels. The shift away from traditional brick-and-mortar stores toward app-based ordering continues to reshape retail consumption across the country.

On-demand food delivery services served as a primary growth engine, expanding 8.9% year-on-year to reach 3.8 trillion won. Scorching summer temperatures prompted households to replace home cooking and outdoor dining with app-based meal orders. Major food delivery networks competed aggressively during the summer months, offering free delivery subscriptions, discounted bundle promotions, and fast turnaround times to capture high seasonal order volumes.

Digital spending on food and grocery products, including agricultural, livestock, and fishery items, rose 9.3% to a total of 4.8 trillion won. Rising fresh food prices and extreme weather conditions led shoppers to rely heavily on overnight grocery delivery platforms. Consumers increasingly prefer digital marketplaces that guarantee temperature-controlled cold-chain shipping for seasonal fruits, vegetables, and premium meats delivered directly to their doorsteps before dawn.

The automotive segment posted the fastest percentage expansion among all product categories, shooting up 31.1% year-on-year to 960 billion won. Rising consumer appetite for imported electric vehicles, particularly Tesla models, drove the surge in online car purchases. Foreign automakers increasingly utilize streamlined digital storefronts that allow customers to configure, finance, and finalize new vehicle purchases through mobile apps and web portals without visiting physical dealerships.

Mobile commerce maintained its commanding dominance over digital retail channels. Purchases completed on smartphones, tablets, and connected portable devices climbed 6.4% year-on-year to 19.6 trillion won. Mobile transactions represented 78% of all online shopping sales during the month, showing a slight decrease of 0.6 percentage points compared to the previous year as some desktop transactions in high-ticket travel and automotive categories rebounded.

The rapid expansion of quick-commerce infrastructure continues to accelerate digital retail adoption across South Korea. Automated fulfillment centers, neighborhood micro-warehouses, and electric delivery fleets enable platforms to deliver packaged goods, home goods, and electronics within two hours of order placement. This logistics efficiency makes online shopping far more convenient than visiting local shopping malls or traditional supermarkets.

Specialized niche platforms and online-only marketplaces outpaced broader department store websites during the mid-summer shopping season. Platforms specializing in cosmetics, summer apparel, cooling appliances, and travel services experienced double-digit transaction gains. The steady popularity of beauty items and personal care goods further boosted turnover as domestic cosmetics brands expanded promotional discounts ahead of summer vacation travel.

Retail analysts attribute the continued resilience of digital commerce to structural lifestyle shifts rather than temporary seasonal trends. High smartphone penetration, seamless digital payment systems, and deeply integrated loyalty ecosystems keep South Korean consumers locked into digital storefronts. Even as inflation pressures discretionary household budgets, shoppers utilize price-comparison algorithms and digital discount coupons to maximize their purchasing power.

Moving into the autumn shopping season, digital retailers are preparing promotional campaigns around major national holidays and autumn travel events. Platforms are expanding cross-border e-commerce options and integrating artificial intelligence shopping assistants to deliver personalized product recommendations. With consumer habits firmly rooted in mobile convenience, South Korea’s digital retail market remains on track for sustained growth throughout the remainder of the year.
