Key Points:

  • India’s merchandise exports to ASEAN surged 61.6% to reach $14.61 billion during the April-June quarter.
  • Outbound shipments to Singapore more than doubled, jumping 101.2% to $6.52 billion, while exports to Malaysia rose 75.2%.
  • The export boom was powered by a 67.6% surge in refined petroleum products alongside strong gains in electronics and engineering goods.
  • Southeast Asian markets outpaced traditional Western trading partners, where shipments to the United States grew by just 3%.

India’s export engine is finding powerful momentum in Southeast Asia. Official trade data released by national commerce authorities reveals that merchandise shipments to the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) jumped 61.6% year-on-year during the April-to-June quarter. Total outbound trade to the regional bloc reached $14.61 billion, up from $9.04 billion in the same period of the previous year, establishing Southeast Asia as the primary driver of India’s international trade growth.

Individual country performance within ASEAN showed remarkable expansion. Shipments to Singapore more than doubled, rocketing 101.2% to $6.52 billion compared with $3.24 billion during the prior-year quarter. Similarly, exports to Malaysia climbed 75.2% to hit $2.54 billion, while trade flows to Thailand grew 6% to $1.23 billion. The rapid acceleration underscores how deeper commercial ties and trade facilitation agreements are channeling Indian manufactured goods directly into regional distribution networks.

A primary catalyst behind the sharp trade surge was an exponential increase in refined petroleum exports. India’s export value for refined oil products jumped 67.6% to reach $6.9 billion during the quarter. Sourcing crude oil and refining it into high-grade transport fuels allowed domestic refiners to step in and resolve localized fuel deficits across key Asian hubs, including Singapore and neighboring Sri Lanka. Elevated international energy prices also boosted the total dollar value of these fuel deliveries.

Beyond energy shipments, the export basket demonstrated broad-based industrial strength, led by high-value technology products. Electronic goods exports surged 57% year-on-year to reach $5.9 billion, while engineering goods shipments expanded 17.7%. The rapid expansion of domestic electronics manufacturing and smartphone assembly lines—supported by government production-linked incentive schemes—enabled Indian factories to capture a growing share of the global consumer electronics supply chain.

The strong export performance extended across broader Asian free trade agreement partners. In South Asia, shipments to Sri Lanka soared 123.8% to $2.35 billion, while overall exports to the South Asian Free Trade Area expanded 36.6% to $8.40 billion. In East Asia, outbound shipments to South Korea climbed 22.6% to $1.95 billion, and exports to Japan grew 22.4% to $1.75 billion, proving that regional trade pacts are delivering tangible market access gains for domestic exporters.

The rapid expansion across Southeast Asia stands in sharp contrast to moderating demand from traditional Western trading partners. Shipments to the United States grew by just 3% during the April-to-July period, while exports to the European Union rose by a modest 3.5%. High interest rates, shifting tariff policies, and cooling consumer demand across Western economies have prompted Indian exporters to pivot toward fast-growing Asian consumer markets.

On a national level, cumulative merchandise exports during the April-June quarter reached $129.32 billion, representing a 15.92% increase compared to $111.57 billion recorded in the previous fiscal year. Non-petroleum exports expanded 12.44% to $106.30 billion, demonstrating that non-oil manufacturing sectors are making substantial contributions. When combined with commercial services, total Indian exports for the quarter rose 11.37% to reach $232.73 billion.

Trade economists note that India’s growing footprint across ASEAN highlights the strategic realignment of Asian supply chains. As global corporations adopt diversification strategies and expand manufacturing across Asia, India has positioned itself as an essential supplier of intermediate industrial goods, precision components, and processed chemicals. Utilizing 16 operational free trade agreements allows domestic manufacturers to integrate seamlessly into Southeast Asian production clusters.

As international trade routes adapt to geopolitical tensions and shifting tariffs, the April-June trade performance confirms that Southeast Asia is playing an indispensable role in India’s export growth. By combining strong petroleum refining capacity, expanding electronics manufacturing, and deep regional trade pacts, the nation is building a diversified export engine capable of sustaining long-term economic expansion across global markets.
