SpaceX officially commenced commercial operations for its Starlink broadband service in Vietnam, opening up one of the region’s fastest-growing digital economies to billionaire Elon Musk’s satellite constellation. Local consumers and businesses can now place online orders for residential and corporate plans, marking a major milestone for satellite communications in the country.
Under the official pricing structure announced for the market, residential customers can choose between two primary tiers. A basic package priced at roughly 1.13 million dong, or about $43 per month, delivers download speeds of up to 100Mbps. A higher-tier family plan priced at approximately 1.71 million dong, or $65 monthly, provides speeds exceeding 400Mbps. Additionally, users must purchase a Standard hardware kit or alternative equipment like the Starlink Mini, which requires an upfront investment ranging from $330 to $390.
The market entry follows months of careful regulatory preparation and negotiations with Hanoi authorities. The government granted operational licenses to a local corporate entity, Starlink Services Vietnam Co. Ltd., allowing the company to deploy network infrastructure under a controlled pilot program. To ensure the service integrates smoothly without disrupting domestic telecommunications operators, regulators capped the subscriber ceiling at 600,000 terminals during the trial period, which runs through the end of 2030.
While urban centers across the country benefit from dense, affordable fiber-optic broadband networks, the satellite system targets hard-to-reach rural regions, mountainous terrains, isolated islands, and maritime vessels. Furthermore, the service acts as a high-speed redundant backup connection for commercial enterprises and industrial operations. SpaceX also received authorization to construct four ground gateway stations across the country to bridge data traffic smoothly between orbital satellites and local ground terminals.
With this expansion, Vietnam joins Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and East Timor as regional markets featuring active satellite coverage.
