The action spans 973,156 domestically built Model 3 sedans, 1.96 million Shanghai-built Model Y crossovers, 35,590 imported Model 3s, 8,328 imported Model X SUVs, and 2,123 imported Model S luxury sedans. The campaign covers the vast majority of vehicles the company has delivered to Chinese consumers since commencing operations at its Shanghai Gigafactory.
Chinese market regulators determined that the vehicles’ mechanical emergency interior door release handles closely match the surrounding interior trim, making them difficult to locate and operate in an emergency. In the event of a severe collision where a vehicle’s low-voltage electrical system loses power, electronic door release buttons can fail.
