Key Points:

  • Nvidia and Corning plan to build three advanced factories in Texas and North Carolina.
  • The massive manufacturing project will create at least 3,000 new jobs for American workers.
  • Nvidia gains the right to invest exactly $2.7 billion directly into the glass company.
  • Engineers want to replace heavy copper wires inside computer systems with tiny glass fibers.

Nvidia and Corning announced a massive business partnership on Wednesday morning. The two technology companies plan to build three new manufacturing facilities in Texas and North Carolina. These factories will focus entirely on creating advanced optical technologies for Nvidia. The chipmaker is currently the most valuable semiconductor company in the world. The companies expect this huge project to create at least 3,000 new jobs for American workers. This expansion will also increase the optical manufacturing capacity of Corning by ten times.

Investors loved the factory news and immediately bought shares. Corning saw its stock climb 10 percent during morning trading, while Nvidia stock gained more than 4 percent. The deal gives Nvidia the option to invest up to $2.7 billion directly into Corning. Nvidia also received special warrants to buy up to 15 million shares of Corning common stock at exactly $180 per share. This target price sits well above the Tuesday closing price of $162.10.

Furthermore, Nvidia holds a pre-funded warrant to buy up to 3 million shares of Corning stock. This specific purchase will cost the chipmaker exactly $500 million. Neither company disclosed the complete financial terms regarding the factory construction costs. However, the massive multiyear agreement brings two major technology infrastructure players together. Both companies experienced incredible financial growth since the public launch of OpenAI and ChatGPT back in 2022.

The part is set to completely change how modern computers handle artificial intelligence programs. Right now, data center operators use thousands of heavy copper cables to connect various computer components. Nvidia plans to replace these copper wires with optical glass fibers made by Corning. Engineers call this new computer design co-packaged optics. Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang recently told developers that co-packaged optics remain essential for the future of artificial intelligence.

Glass fibers offer massive advantages over traditional copper wires. Fiber-optic cables look like tiny, flexible strands of glass. They transmit data using actual light photons instead of electrical currents. Light travels much faster than electricity and requires far less energy to travel across a room. Corning Chief Executive Officer Wendell Weeks explained the basic science behind the shift. He stated that moving photons uses 5 to 20 times less power than moving electrons through standard copper wires. This energy efficiency matters immensely for huge data centers that consume massive amounts of electricity.

Wendell Weeks praised his new partner in a joint press release. He said the work Nvidia does helps both the future of technology and the American manufacturing workforce. Vlad Galabov works as a technology researcher at Omdia. He also explained the mechanical benefits of the new system. He noted that bringing the light conversion process right next to the computer chip saves massive amounts of power. The data only needs to travel across the circuit board, which stops the system from wasting heat and energy.

Corning enjoyed massive success recently as it shifted its historic business toward the digital economy. The 175-year-old company watched its stock surge more than 250 percent over the past year. People mostly know Corning for making the tough display glass for Apple smartphones. However, optical communications now represent its largest and fastest-growing business unit. In January, Meta announced it would spend up to $6 billion to help Corning build a separate optical cable plant in Hickory, North Carolina. That specific project expects to hire around 1,000 workers.

Nvidia cemented its powerful position in the market long ago. The company builds graphics processing units that power complex artificial intelligence programs. Tech giants like Alphabet and Meta buy these expensive chips to build massive data centers. Investors pushed the Nvidia stock price up roughly 14 times higher over the past five years. However, investors have recently started investing in other infrastructure companies. They now also buy shares of chipmaker Intel and memory provider Micron.

Nvidia continues to spend heavily to secure its future supply chain. In March, the chipmaker invested $4 billion in Nvidia’s smaller companies named Coher14-foldm. These smaller companies build the specific lasers that convert electrical signals into light. The new Corning factories will build the glass cables that carry those exact light signals. Corning plans to host a massive investor day at the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday. The glassmaker will then celebrate its 175th anniversary the very next day by ringing the famous closing bell.
