SK Hynix to Launch Next-Generation GDDR7 Graphics Memory Chip in Q3

Key Points

  • SK Hynix plans to produce the GDDR7 chip in the third quarter fully.
  • The GDDR7 chip offers a 60% speed improvement over the previous generation, with 32 gigabits per second operating speed.
  • It can process over 1.5 terabytes of data per second, equivalent to around 300 full-HD movies.
  • The chip features more than a 50% improvement in power efficiency due to new packaging technology.

SK Hynix, the world’s second-largest memory chip maker, announced on Tuesday that it plans to commence full-scale production of its next-generation GDDR7 graphics memory chip in the third quarter. With its impressive performance and efficiency, this new product is set to revolutionize the graphics memory market.

The GDDR7 chip, designed for high-end graphics cards, boasts an operating speed of 32 gigabits per second, a 60% improvement over the previous generation. This significant upgrade allows the chip to process over 1.5 terabytes of data per second, equivalent to around 300 full-HD movies. Such a capability positions the GDDR7 as the industry leader in graphics memory performance.

In addition to its enhanced speed, the GDDR7 chip features improved power efficiency. The new packaging technology used in the chip addresses heat issues that arise from its ultra-fast data processing, resulting in more than a 50% increase in power efficiency compared to the previous generation. This advancement is crucial for maintaining optimal performance and longevity in high-performance computing environments.

Lee Sang-kwon, head of the DRAM product planning division at SK Hynix, emphasized the wide range of applications for the GDDR7 chip. “GDDR7 is expected to be adopted by a broader array of applications, such as high-specification 3D graphics, AI, high-performance computing, and autonomous driving,” Lee stated. This versatility makes the GDDR7 an attractive option for various industries that require advanced computing capabilities.

The launch of the GDDR7 chip aligns with SK Hynix’s strategy to strengthen its position as a leading provider of premium memory solutions. “We will continue to work toward enhancing our position as the most trusted AI memory solution provider by further strengthening our premium memory lineup,” Lee added. The company’s commitment to innovation and quality positions it well to meet the growing demands of the technology industry.

SK Hynix’s announcement of the GDDR7 chip highlights the company’s ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of memory technology. By offering significant improvements in speed and efficiency, the GDDR7 is set to become a key component in the next generation of high-performance computing and graphics applications. As the technology industry continues to evolve, SK Hynix remains at the forefront, delivering cutting-edge solutions that meet the needs of modern computing.
