Truck Rivals Volvo and Daimler Team Up on New Software Company

Key Points

  • Trucking giants Volvo and Daimler are creating a new joint company called Coretura. They want to develop a shared software platform.
  • The main reason is to save money and reduce their dependence on outside technology suppliers.
  • They hope their new platform will become the new standard for the entire trucking industry.
  • The first trucks using the new Coretura software are expected to be delivered in 2027.

In a surprising move, two of Europe’s largest truck manufacturers, AB Volvo and Daimler Truck, are joining forces. They announced on Tuesday that they are forming a new company to develop a shared software system that will power their future vehicles. The goal is to cut costs and break free from their heavy reliance on outside tech suppliers.

Currently, both companies heavily rely on other tech firms to supply the various electronic components and the software that controls them. This system is expensive and can cause delays. By creating their standardized platform, they hope to take back control and set a new “industry standard” for how trucks are built.

The new joint venture, named Coretura, will be based in Gothenburg, Sweden, and will initially employ approximately 50 employees. The new CEO, a Volvo veteran named Johan Lunden, explained that software now controls everything in a modern truck. He said it’s crucial for making future trucks safer, more productive, and better for the environment.

The company isn’t wasting any time, with plans for the first trucks using the new platform to hit the road in 2027.

While Volvo and Daimler are fierce competitors on the sales floor, this isn’t the first time they’ve worked together. They have previously partnered on projects related to electric vehicle charging and hydrogen fuel cell technology, demonstrating their willingness to cooperate on significant, future-focused challenges.
