Key Points

  • President Trump issued an executive order closing federal offices on December 24 and 26.
  • The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) will not be following the federal government’s schedule.
  • The stock market will have its standard early close at 1:00 PM ET on Christmas Eve (December 24).
  • The NYSE will be open for a full day of trading on the day after Christmas (December 26).

The New York Stock Exchange is making it clear: it’s business as usual this Christmas, even if the rest of the federal government is taking a longer break. The NYSE confirmed it will stick to its planned holiday trading schedule, despite a new executive order from President Donald Trump that closes federal offices for an extended period.

In a notice posted on its website, the exchange outlined its plans. Trading will close early at 1:00 PM Eastern Time on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, which is Christmas Eve. After-hours trading will end at 5:00 PM. Crucially, the market will be open for a full, regular trading day on Friday, December 26.

This stands in contrast to the White House’s announcement. On Thursday, President Trump issued an executive order granting federal employees both Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas as paid days off, creating a long holiday weekend.

The NYSE’s decision underscores that Wall Street operates on its own calendar, separate from federal government closures. The exchange confirmed that the schedule applies to all of its markets, including the NYSE American, Arca, and its options and bond exchanges.

So while federal workers get to enjoy some extra time off, traders and investors will need to be ready for action on the day after Christmas. The notice from the NYSE ensures there’s no confusion and that the world’s most famous stock market will continue to operate through the holiday week.
