X (Formerly Twitter) has announced the expansion of its audio and video calling feature to all users, making it accessible beyond Premium accounts. Originally introduced for Premium users last year, the feature is now being rolled out to non-Premium users, offering a new way to communicate on the platform.
The decision to extend this feature to all users was shared by engineer Enrique Barragan with an X status on Friday, indicating a significant step towards enhancing communication options on the social media platform. In a Reply on Saturday, Elon Musk said, “As soon as we are confident that it is robust, A/V calling will roll out widely to X users.”
Integrated into X’s direct messaging feature, the audio and video calling capability allows users to make and receive calls within the platform. While Premium users had early access, non-premium users can now enjoy this functionality.
Users can navigate Settings and Support > Settings and Privacy> Privacy and Safety> Direct messages to customize calling preferences.
Within this menu, users will find the option to specify who can initiate audio and video calls. Options include limiting calls to people in the user’s address book, those they follow, verified users, or allowing calls from everyone. Additionally, users can toggle the feature on or off according to their preferences.
Incoming calls will be received on the user’s device, similar to traditional phone calls, displaying the caller’s name, or the name provided to X, on the lock screen.
