Key Points:

  • Rajesh Jha will retire from his executive role at Microsoft on July 1.
  • He managed the massive Experiences and Devices unit for the company.
  • Jha will remain with the tech giant in a special advisory position.
  • CEO Satya Nadella praised Jha for his constant presence and lasting impact.

Microsoft is losing one of its longest-serving and most important leaders. Rajesh Jha announced his retirement on Thursday after spending more than three decades climbing the ranks at the technology giant. He currently runs the massive Experiences and Devices unit, which touches the daily lives of billions of people around the world.

Jha oversees some of the most recognizable software on the planet. His team manages the Windows operating system and the entire Microsoft 365 suite. This software package includes essential office tools like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams. Beyond software, his group also directs the company’s internal hardware development, bringing physical products like the Surface line of personal computers to the market.

The transition will not happen overnight. Jha plans to step down from his current executive position on July 1. However, he will not leave the company completely. He will move into a special advisory role, helping guide the leadership team as they figure out the next chapter for these critical business products.

Company leaders clearly prepared for this moment. In an internal memo sent to employees, Jha explained that he and Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella spent a long time planning this exact succession. They wanted to make sure the transition goes smoothly without disrupting the teams building the software.

To fill the massive gap left by his departure, Microsoft announced a series of high-level promotions. Jeff Teper will step up to become an executive vice president. Meanwhile, the company promoted both Sumit Chauhan and Kirk Koenigsbauer to the role of president within the division. These company veterans will now take charge of keeping Microsoft’s core products competitive.

Nadella shared a brief but touching tribute to his outgoing colleague. He noted that Jha has been a constant presence throughout his entire career at the company. Working together for decades, the two men helped transform Microsoft from a traditional software vendor into a modern cloud computing and artificial intelligence powerhouse.

This announcement marks the second major leadership shakeup at Microsoft in just a few weeks. Last month, the company revealed that Phil Spencer, the famous head of its Xbox gaming division, is also retiring. To replace Spencer, Microsoft promoted company insider Asha Sharma to serve as the new executive vice president and CEO of the gaming unit.

These high-profile retirements show a clear generational shift happening at the very top of the company. The old guard is slowly stepping back, making room for new leaders to take the wheel. This change arrives at a crucial time, as the company pushes heavily into new digital tools and integrates smart features across Windows and Office.

The newly promoted leaders face a massive challenge. They must maintain the huge success of Windows and Office while convincing everyday users and large businesses to adopt new tech tools. With Jha sticking around as an advisor, they will at least have his thirty years of experience to lean on during the tough months ahead.
