Key Points:

  • US gasoline pump prices reached a record high of 3.32 dollars per gallon.
  • Gasoline futures surged 27 percent this week due to the Middle East conflict.
  • China ordered its largest refiners to stop exporting diesel and gasoline.
  • Qatar warned that all Gulf energy exports might stop within weeks.

US drivers are feeling the pinch at the fuel pump. The average retail price of gasoline climbed to 3.32 dollars a gallon on Thursday. According to the American Automobile Association, this marks the highest price recorded at any time during either of President Donald Trump’s terms in office.

This sudden price jump creates a massive headache for the administration. President Trump frequently highlights cheap gasoline as proof of American energy dominance. With the crucial midterm elections coming up later this year, angry voters paying high prices for fuel could spell trouble for his political party.

The root cause of the spike lies far away in the Middle East. Ongoing military conflict is severely disrupting global energy supplies. The situation is so unstable that gasoline futures rallied an incredible 27 percent this week alone, putting them on track for their biggest weekly jump since March 2022.

The White House is scrambling to find solutions to lower prices. Late Thursday, the Treasury Department quietly relaxed trade restrictions. They gave India permission to purchase Russian oil, hoping this extra supply would cool down the global market.

Meanwhile, Asian countries are taking protective measures. Because the vital Strait of Hormuz is effectively blocked, many Asian refiners cannot get the crude oil they need. In response, China ordered its massive state-run refineries to completely halt all exports of diesel and gasoline to keep fuel inside the country.

The situation could quickly get much worse. Qatar’s Energy Minister, Saad al-Kaabi, issued a stark warning. He stated that if the conflict with Iran continues, all energy suppliers in the Persian Gulf will likely have to suspend exports within a few weeks. Following a recent drone attack, Qatar already shut down its massive natural gas plant and refuses to restart it until the fighting stops.

Finally, a seasonal shift is adding extra pain for American drivers. US refineries are currently switching over to produce a more expensive, summer-grade gasoline. This standard yearly transition naturally pushes prices up every spring, making a bad situation even worse for consumers.
