In Bangladesh’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, internet connectivity is pivotal in shaping user experiences and driving economic growth. The 2024 nPerf study, based on comprehensive tests conducted by end-users, provides valuable insights into the performance of mobile and fixed internet service providers (ISPs) nationwide. The study highlights Bangladesh’s ISP market leaders and emerging contenders by evaluating key metrics such as speed, latency, and streaming quality. This article delves into the findings of the nPerf study, spotlighting the top-performing mobile and fixed internet providers in Bangladesh for 2024.
MOBILE INTERNET
The subscribers of Grameenphone enjoyed the best mobile Internet performances in Bangladesh during 2024.
For this analysis, 13,872 tests carried out in the nPerf app (Android and iOS) in Bangladesh by users from the country’s main operators (Banglalink, Grameenphone, Robi/Airtel, and Teletalk) between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024, have been taken into account.
The nPerf score considers the measured speeds, latency, and streaming and browsing tests. The points for the rates and latency are calculated on a logarithmic scale to represent the user’s perception better. nPerf offers accurate data independent of Internet providers.
Grameenphone is dominating across all indicators
Grameenphone is the market leader, excelling in all key performance indicators. With remarkable speed and user experience scores, Grameenphone sets a high standard in the Bangladesh ISP market. Its superior performance across the board makes it the top choice for consumers seeking reliable, high-quality Internet service.
- Download speed: GrameenPhone subscribers enjoyed the best average mobile Internet download speed (20 Mb/s) in 2024. The download speed indicates the amount of data a connection can receive from the nPerf server in one second. The higher the measured value, the better the connection speed. Speeds ranging from 10 Mb/s to 25 Mb/s are sufficient for HD streaming, video chats, and cloud uploads.
- Browsing test: Grameenphone emerged as the leading provider for web browsing with an efficiency rate of 41.5%, equivalent to an average page load time of 5,8 seconds.
Banglalink is strong in streaming and latency
Ranked second, Banglalink excels in streaming (77%) and latency (40.5 ms). These strong performances propel Banglalink to second place, making it a solid option for users who prioritize seamless media consumption and low-latency Internet activities.
The streaming test evaluates YouTube streaming quality by conducting assessments at three different resolutions: 360p (Standard Definition), 720p (High Definition), and 1080p (Full High Definition). The overall rating is derived from an average of these three tests, ensuring a comprehensive measure of streaming performance across varying levels of video quality. A score between 75% and 100% indicates smooth video streaming.
The latency describes how responsive the connection is. Lower latency translates to more immediate interaction with content. Latency is measured in milliseconds (ms). 31 ms to 100 ms supports optimal Internet performance with minimal delay.
Robi/Airtel is competitive in speed and streaming
Robi/Airtel secures the third position, demonstrating resilience in speed and streaming. Its scores in these areas are close to those of the leader, Grameenphone, indicating that Robi/Airtel offers a competitive Internet experience for users who seek robust performance in these categories.
Teletalk is lagging but has the potential for improvement
Teletalk ranks fourth. Despite its current position, there is potential for improvement. Teletalk’s ongoing efforts to enhance its services could lead to better performance metrics in the future, making it a viable option for budget-conscious consumers.
FIXED INTERNET
The subscribers of DOT Internet enjoyed the best-fixed Internet performances in Bangladesh during 2024.
For this analysis, 208,979 tests were carried out with the nPerf web speed test and in the nPerf app (Android and iOS) by users in Bangladesh from the country’s main operators (Amber IT, Carnival Internet, Jadoo Broadband, DOT Internet, Link3, and Orange Communication) between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024, have been taken into account.
DOT Internet dominates in speed and latency
DOT Internet stands out as the market leader, excelling in nearly all key performance indicators except streaming. With remarkable download speeds of 103 Mb/s and upload speeds of 99 Mb/s, DOT Internet dominates in speed. It has a commendable latency of 60 ms, making it the top choice for consumers seeking reliable and high-quality Internet service across multiple usage scenarios.
Amber IT is leading in streaming
Amber IT secures the second position, distinguished by its exceptional streaming performance (82.5%). This strength in streaming propels Amber IT to the second spot in the rankings, making it an excellent option for users who prioritize a seamless media consumption experience.
Link3 strong in streaming
Link3 ranks third, showing solid streaming performance with an 82% score. The performance positions Link3 as a competitive choice for consumers looking for reliable streaming capabilities.
Jadoo Broadband is resilient in streaming
Jadoo Broadband secures the fourth position, demonstrating resilience in streaming with a score of 79,5%. The performance indicates that Jadoo provides a robust streaming experience, making it a viable option for users focused on media consumption.
Carnival Internet is notable in user experience
Carnival Internet ranks fifth, showing strength in user experience, particularly in streaming, with a score of 78,5%. This performance highlights Carnival Internet as a contender for consumers seeking a good Internet experience with solid streaming capabilities.
Orange Communication is strong in streaming
Orange Communication ranks sixth, significantly behind its competitors, but it has a notable performance in streaming. Despite its position, Orange Communication offers a commendable streaming experience, making it a potential choice for users primarily interested in media consumption.
Methodology and Credibility of the nPerf Study
The nPerf study is based on thousands of tests carried out exclusively by the operators’ end customers, making it one of the country’s largest “crowdsourced” studies. These tests reflect the real experience of the general public in Bangladesh on the various Internet networks.
This study has considered only the tests on Wi-Fi networks in the nPerf mobile app (Android & iOS) for fixed connections. Employs a strong filtering method to reflect real customer experiences on a specific network (mobile or fixed line). Measures are taken to prevent probes and measurement robots from affecting the results.
nPerf is a French company based in Lyon. For over a decade, nPerf has been a trusted partner for fixed and mobile operators, providing comprehensive network testing solutions and analysis. nPerf’s mission is to accurately measure, evaluate, and enhance the understanding of Internet connectivity worldwide.
Conclusion
The 2024 nPerf study offers a detailed snapshot of the internet connectivity landscape in Bangladesh, underscoring the dominance of Grameenphone and DOT Internet in the mobile and fixed internet segments, respectively. With impressive performance across various metrics, these providers set high speed, latency, and user experience standards. Meanwhile, competitors like Banglalink, Robi/Airtel, Amber IT, and Link3 demonstrate strong capabilities, particularly in streaming and user engagement. As the demand for reliable and high-quality internet continues to grow, the findings of the nPerf study serve as a crucial benchmark for consumers and ISPs alike, fostering a competitive environment that drives continuous improvement in Bangladesh’s internet services.
